The Count of Monte Cristo

Personality:
• Avenger
First and foremost, it is important to outline that in a Fate Grand Order context, the class of Avenger itself is defined specifically by...well, vengeance. The individuals that fall under the designation are quite literally strengthened by the power of their hatred, none of which they can forget due to a passive skill shared by the entire class. A different Avenger speaks about it briefly, explaining that to be one of them is to live fueled by constant anger and knowing next to nothing else. She goes so far as to state that killing an Avenger is a mercy, as it is the only way they can ever truly know peace.
Of those that are summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru, the Count is on the more unhinged end among his fellow Avengers. While some may be seen to dislike or feel indifferent towards the hatred that fuels them, the Count more often revels in it. To him, hatred is what strengthens him not only in a literal sense but in the metaphorical--that his hate and vengeance itself renders him powerful enough to stand against any enemy he needs to destroy.
Does any of this strictly matter in a situation where the Count isn't a Servant? Not really. But it still remains as important context for his general mindset overall.
• The Count of Monte Cristo
While all adaptations of a work are likely to vary in strict accuracy (did you know Gankutsuou had mechas? I sure didn't.) the spirit of the Count himself is generally as presented in Dumas' work. He is a force for vengeance without mercy to those who have wronged him or those close to him (namely, Ritsuka), but he does still maintain standards whether he is aware of it or not. In FGO itself he is occasionally seen entertaining children (they think the way he laughs is funny). Even as a hate-driven Avenger, the man who decided his vengeance had gone too far when a child was indirectly killed has clearly maintained his general standards of what defines 'revenge'. Disgusted by the world and human nature, he is however unfailingly loyal to the kindness within it.
His harshest vengeance is reserved for the strong who victimize those weaker than themselves, and in the drama CD--taking place between his release from prison and reappearance in the novel--he goes so far as to utilize revenge itself manifested as black fire (his standard weapon as a Servant later on) to kill an immortal vampire that was partially responsible for Abbe Faria's imprisonment. Declaring himself essentially the will of God and the hand of divine retribution, from there he goes on to enact the long and drawn out revenge as seen in the novel itself.
Even setting aside physical or magical power, the Count is deviously clever, wickedly smart, and worst of all, patient. Waiting fourteen years in prison for a chance to escape will do that, and even now he sees no issue in retribution that takes a little longer than it should--as the man himself often says, 'wait and hope'. He has a multitude of skills, speaks several languages, and is cunning enough to construct massive plans with multiple moving parts as well as ensure they go off without a hitch. No matter how powerful, mortal or otherwise, if the Count decides you've slighted him or someone weaker than yourself he has reason to care about, what he considers justice will find you no matter how long it takes.
• Edmond Dantès
The Count no longer considers himself to be 'Edmond Dantès'. While 'Dantès' ultimately completed his journey of revenge and was redeemed by love, Avenger is summoned specifically as 'the Count of Monte Cristo' himself; a manifestation and avatar of the desire for revenge at its peak. But that said, for all intents and purposes--memory, backstory, etc.--he is still actually Dantès in some form. While the Count takes himself far too seriously, he also tends toward moments of absurdity on occasion; he's the sort of person that accepts the complete nonsense that tends to happen around Chaldea and goes along with it to find the solution alongside Ritsuka rather than resist the complete lunacy for the madness it can be.
Compared to another Avenger (Angra Mainyu) who accepts evil as inherent to humankind, the Count is enraged by it and lashes out against that evil in turn. He also completely fails to understand the nature of people like Jeanne d'Arc, who harbors no hatred or resentment even after being betrayed. However, he supports people who serve as examples for the redeeming nature of humanity. He fights beside and on behalf of Ritsuka who endeavors to restore and protect human history (and in the novel, Dantès himself saved his former captain from bankruptcy for trying to secure his release from prison) and seems to harbor no hatred for her will or general existence.
He is said in-universe to be someone capable of great love and care, as only such a person could turn into an Avenger after being betrayed by those they loved. He is also said to be the sort of person that can be made a trustworthy ally simply by defeating him. He is 'an Avenger born of love who speaks about hatred', harboring both in extremes at any given time despite his insistence to the contrary.
5-10 Key Character Traits: Vindictive, cold, calculating, patient, loyal (to friends), merciless (to enemies), cynical.
Would you prefer a monster that FITS your character’s personality, CONFLICTS with it, EITHER, or opt for 100% RANDOMIZATION? fits, please!
